i don't have any pictures..but some words on last night. a few days ago i noticed a poster on the street advertising a show by new york's own Agnostic Front, a hardcore punk band from the lower east side, that has been playing since the early 80's. not only are they one of the best in their genre, vinnie stigma, guitarist and leader, also owns ny hard core tattoo shop on stanton st, where i got all my tattoos. small world! i was introduced to the band by my buddy russell, who was the electrician foreman on the London NYC hotel project i did last year. russell is also a partner in the shop. at another band's show, Murphys Law, during the final days of the continental on 2nd ave, we hung out with the guys from AF. so this should be fun!
on the way to club atlantik, where the show was, we stopped by the wine fest in the münsterplatz for some flammkuchen, an alsatian pizza, with bacon, onions and cheese. i've made this at home, it's also called tarte flambe. we tried 2 different vendors versions and they were just delicious. we were partial to the one with the thinner crust and more well done-ness. great stuff.
at the club, all of freiburgs hard core punks must have been there...they must not come out during the day, cuz i never saw any around town. a great group, they really love the music and support the bands. many new york bands t shirts..i had my nyhc tatoo t on, and as soon as i walked in there was a german kid with the same one! i ran into steve gallo, the drummer from AF, i had met him in ny. he recognizied my tattoo, as there is a picture of it in the window of the shop in nyc. it was great to talk to a fellow ny'er. they are on a 3 month summer tour of europe, sometimes playing each day for 2 weeks in a different city. needless to say, they are in great shape....you have to be doing what they do every night.
the club was packed, hot and sweaty, just like a great punk show should be. nice place, dark and gothic...not too big, so the sound was great. a local punk band opened, they were ok. but when AF took the stage the place went nuts. AF are extremely energetic, loud and powerful. they totally had the audience from the first note..they played some stuff from the new album, warrior, and a bunch of old faves. the kids knew all the words, and were slamming around, fist raising, stage diving, passing bodies around, and generally having a great time. the band was like a machine, you could tell they've been on the road a long time. they were also totally into it, by no means just punching the clock. they played about an hour 15 or so, it was an awsome evening. gisi loved them. i thought they rocked..real pro's who are still passionate about their art.
afterwards we walked home, it was chilly out but it felt great after 110 degrees in the club, we were pretty soaked. i got an ice cream from a shop just about to close..mmm, coconut.. we went home and listened to the dead kennedys records. they were a fave of gisi's back in the day. i also wrote last nights entry at that time..soon it was 2am..off to sleep. Next, todays trip to the Rieselfeld neighborhood...with pix!
